Blending the improvised sounds of six taonga puoro performers with often slow-moving and ethereal material from Western instruments, Riki Pirihi’s ‘Poutama’ combines the improvisatory nature of many different sound worlds. Throughout, Riki leads the ensemble with a series of ‘conduction’ gestures, where the musicians respond to and follow a series of hand and body gestures: from clear conducting cues to facial expressions, and even the bouncing of a tennis ball. This conduction gives the musicians direction in how to perform the work together, while allowing them the freedom to respond to Riki’s gestures and their fellow musicians in a creative way. This work was performed as part of Stroma’s Cage Against the Machine 2 concert in Wellington’s City Gallery, with multiple performances of ambient, spatial music presented simultaneously. Performed by Stroma: Taonga puoro: Māia-te-oho Holman-Wharehoka, Komako Silver, Te Kahureremoa Taumata, Ensai August, Kiva Parsons-Pirihi, Alistair Fraser; Bridget Douglas (flute), Alex Hambleton (horn), Matthew Allison (trombone), Thomas Guldborg (percussion), Alan Molina (violin), Megan Molina (violin), Nicholas Hancox (viola), Ken Ichinose (cello), Riki Pirhi (conduction) on 23 May 2024.
