Recitative: Straight Opening Her Fertile Womb | Aria: Now Heaven in Fullest Glory | by Joseph Haydn | Bass-Baritone | Sung by Laurence Williams Haydn's The Creation is a magnificent oratorio that tells the story of the biblical creation. Set to music by Joseph Haydn, the work follows the narrative of Genesis, depicting the formation of the world from chaos to order. This recitative and aria comes from the 2nd of 3 parts of the oratorio and describes the various animals appearing, starting with the 'tawny' lion, then the flexible tiger, the nimble stag, the sprightly steed, cattle, 'bleating' flocks, hosts of insects and finally the sinuous worm! The peculiar syntax of the English text in Haydn's The Creation can be traced back to the work's unusual genesis. The original libretto, an anonymous compilation of Genesis, Psalms, and Milton's poetry, was initially offered to Handel, who declined. Years later, Haydn encountered the libretto during visit to England in 1795 and brought it back to Vienna. There, Baron Gottfried van Swieten (which whom Haydn had previously collaborated) translated the text into German. The work was designed so that it would be bi-lingual, van Swieten doing what he could to preserve the same syllable stresses between the English and German versions. However, this results in some bizarre and often amusing phraseology which is, perhaps, part of the charm of this piece. This is more than made up for by the wonderfully descriptive music Haydn writes, depicting every animal and often echoing their sound with different motifs and instruments.
