8 Winter Miles on the Appalachian Trail Shenandoah National Park

So it begins…Trail #1 of the journey to running 101 new trails. Come run 8 snowy miles on the Appalachian Trail with me. Today we are in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, USA. I set out to planning to run 10-12 miles of the AT this day, however trail conditions and my own conditioning factored into a much shorter day on the trail. I started the run late afternoon, the park entrances in the northern part of the National Park had just reopened as they had been closed for days due to a regional snowstorm that had moved through the area. The higher in elevation I got along the trail the deeper the snow, and the slower the miles. I experienced some light rainfall, gusty mountain pass winds, roars of distant thunder, and shared the trail with only a couple herds of deer. All of this while running during the winter golden hour. As tough as the winter trail miles are, I'm going to miss battling the winter element out there. I'll miss the solitude that winter provides on the trails. I'll miss the crunch of the fresh snow beneath my trail shoes. I'll miss the feeling of being all bundled up in winter gear while moving through zero-degree wind chills.
