Join Btilisaniyat International Academy for a deep dive into the linguistic structure of Moroccan Arabic (Darija). In this lecture, PhD researcher Prof. Ayoub Chifa from Ibn Tofail University presents a groundbreaking syntactic-semantic analysis of negation, one of the most complex grammatical features of language. This session, moderated by Prof. Hmad Benaissa, challenges traditional "split" and "non-split" negation proposals and introduces a compelling new framework. Prof. Chifa posits that the n-word ʃ(i) serves as the core semantic negator, while the particle ma acts as its syntactic counterpart. In this video, you will learn about: A critical review of existing theories on negation in Moroccan Arabic. An innovative analysis where the n-word carries the inherent negative meaning. The proposed "Agree" relation that resolves long-standing syntactic puzzles. The implications for understanding negation in other Arabic dialects and languages. This lecture is essential for linguists, students of Arabic syntax, and anyone interested in the formal analysis of Darija. Speaker Bio: Prof. Ayoub Chifa is a PhD student in Linguistics at Ibn Tofail University, Kenitra, Morocco. His research focuses on theoretical syntax, generative grammar, and comparative linguistics, with a dedication to advancing the understanding of language structure. Acknowledgements: We extend our sincere gratitude to our speaker, Prof. Ayoub Chifa, for his invaluable insights. Special thanks to our General Supervisors, Dr. Marouan Essakrani and Prof. Yassine Jamal El Idrissi, and to Prof. Soukaina Elbaz for technical assistance. A note of appreciation also to Mr. Rafi Said for his role in facilitating connections. Lecture Comment: "A fascinating and insightful lecture! The clear breakdown of the shortcomings in existing proposals for negation was very helpful. The alternative analysis—positioning ʃ as the semantic negator and ma as its syntactic counterpart—offers a compelling and elegant solution." Questions for Discussion: We invite you to continue the discussion in the comments below. Here are some questions from the live Q&A to spark your thoughts: What is the strongest evidence from native speaker intuition that supports this reversal of feature assignment? How might the proposed "Agree" relation be applied to explain negation in other dialects? Does this mean we should analyze ʃ as originating in the same syntactic position as other n-words? What is the precise semantic contribution of the particle ma in your model? Follow & Engage: Stay connected with the work of Prof. Hmad Benaissa and Btilisaniyat International Academy for future lectures and research.
