Nationally around 5% of working age adults with learning disabilities are in employment but research shows that over 65% would like to work. What Project Search allows, it allows an opportunity over a full academic year to obtain real, meaningful work based experience. Over the course of the summer we’ve been running a series of summer school days. This is to allow the students to get to know each other and the staff that will be supporting them. In the summer school we’ve been doing a series of team building activities, games and training. This is the first summer school we’ve run. We’ve learned that its best to have a selection of different activities in the day including classroom based training, hands on activities and games that get the students moving. Just to welcome you all on behalf of Mid Yorkshire Hospitals and Project Search, welcome to Dewsbury Hospital. This is a really exciting day for us. My name is Gordon Smith, I am the lead for diversity and inclusion in the Trust for the purpose of Project Search I’m one of the people who are acting as the business liaison contact between the Trust and the College and the Council. Today’s the first day of Project Search for Dewsbury Hospital. We’ve just greeted all the students who’ve arrived and they are just in the process of getting to know each other. We’re really lucky today because we’ve got Councillor Pandor who is the local councillor who is also the Leader of Kirklees Council, he’s come to welcome you and say why this project is important to Kirklees Council. How many people do you employ with learning disabilities? What we do know from Project Searches we’ve run at Pinderfields out of the candidates that we had there, we’ve employed 8 of those out of the sort of 17 that we’ve had so far. We will employ a lot more, particularly if you think about people with autism. When I go and talk to people across many organisations, the more diverse the organisation is the more responsive it is to meeting people’s needs. Project Search has a success rate of about 60% of the young people who graduate from the programme and move towards work, so it’s a really successful project, nationally and internationally. My name is Mohammed Rawat, I’m the diversity and inclusion project manager. I work with Gordon Smith who is our lead on diversity and inclusion at the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust. Project Search is all about employment and as a local community we will show some leadership and Project Search allows us not just to show some leadership but also allows us to tap into a workforce which we historically like many other organisations aren’t very good at tapping into. We are fully committed to Project Search. We’ve already run a very successful one at Pinderfields Hospital and now we’re starting the programme with the council and Kirklees College, we’re really keen that this one here is equally, if not more successful.
