Here's why What has led Air Austral to retire its entire Airbus A2 20 fleet? Once hailed as a game changer for regional travel, it promised elegant design, modern comfort, and superior performance thanks to Pratt & Whitney’s advanced GTF engines. But now that promise has gone up in smoke as the very engines that were supposed to be the hallmark of this aircraft are shaking the confidence of airlines, causing some airlines to no longer want to operate it. Why has the A2 20 lost its confidence? How will its future, and Air Austral’s, unfold? Let’s find out! Airbus A220-300 is in HUGE TROUBLE with P&W GTF Engine! Here's why Air Austral was the first airline in the Indian Ocean to operate the A2 20 from 2021, primarily operating the aircraft on short- and medium-haul routes to nearby destinations such as Madagascar, Mauritius, and South Africa. However, persistent engine reliability issues have caused significant downtime and disruption to operations, forcing Air Austral to consider retiring its fleet for fleet stability reasons. What is the main reason? The main reason for the retirement of the aircraft for this airline is centered on its Pratt & Whitney PW 1500G turbofan (GTF) engines after struggling with persistent engine failures over the past four years. These technical challenges stemmed primarily from defects discovered in 2023 related to contaminated powdered metal used in the engine manufacturing process. The issue involves microscopic impurities in the metal powder that make up key engine components, particularly the high-pressure turbine and compressor disc. These impurities can cause microcracks, corrosion, and eventually cracks in these critical components, reducing their durability and potentially leading to engine failures that require extensive inspection and repair programs around the world. Airbus A220-300 is in HUGE TROUBLE with P&W GTF Engine! Here's why Despite identifying and fixing the threat, things are not getting any easier for GTF engines in hotter climates like La Réunion and the Indian Ocean, where durability issues have taken their toll. Since the jet entered service in 2021 on regional routes to Madagascar, Mauritius, and South Africa, they have seen significant downtime and disruption to operations due to these engine issues. This airline currently operates three A2 20 300 aircraft with an average age of 4.5 years, which are equipped with Pratt & Whitney PW 1500G engines, and at least two of the three have reportedly suffered engine failures this year. “Given the technical problems we are experiencing with this mid-range fleet, we believe we have no other option, and it is a forced option, than to try to develop towards a new module to stabilize the company,” said Chairman Hugues Marchessaux. Furthermore, the Chairman said Pratt & Whitney does not appear to have “a clear vision for a short-term improvement in the availability of these engines.” He noted that two of the three aircraft are currently grounded and estimated that Air Austral has only an average of 1 point 75 Airbus A2 20 aircraft throughout the year. This has forced the airline to review its strategy and look for alternative aircraft to provide stability.
