How does a tire support the weight of a car? The answer is not as obvious as you probably think it is. This video explains the physics of how a tire supports the weight of a car and what is happening inside the carcase. Correction: Some of you astute readers have already corrected me in my understanding of how a bicycle wheel supports load. It is in fact a reduction in tension in the bottom spokes (due to slight deformation of the rim) that supports the weight, not increased tension in the upper spokes. I stand corrected. This does not change the mechanism by which tires support load, though. They still work through tension in the upper cords. How wonderful it is that at 64, we can still learn something new.
