Welcome to the SOAR Disability Ministry Training Series! SOAR Disability Ministry Training - Part 6 - Behavior Success Strategies in Disability Ministry - Behavior Solutions - Your Practical Guide Challenging behavior in the classroom? Don't panic—you have a plan. In this crucial sixth video, Doc Hunsley, Executive Director/Founder of SOAR Special Needs, tackles one of the biggest concerns volunteers face: managing problematic behavior. Learn why challenging behavior isn't misbehavior—it's communication—and discover the practical framework that keeps everyone safe while addressing the real need. The Foundation: Behavior is Communication ✓ ALL behavior is communication ✓ Challenging behavior = "Something is wrong and I need help" ✓ It's NOT about being a "bad person"—it's about unmet needs ✓ Your job is to figure out what they're trying to tell you What IS Problematic Behavior? ✓ Depends on the situation, space, and context ✓ Depends on the person and their tolerance level ✓ Depends on how it affects safety and learning ✓ If YOU view it as problematic, take action to work through it Your Behavior Response Strategy: 1. STAY CALM Your anxiety escalates their anxiety. Individuals with special needs may lack typical coping techniques for frustration. Your calm presence helps them regulate. 2. ASK FOR HELP You are NEVER alone! Reach out to: Other volunteers Classroom teachers Coordinators Pastors or ministry leaders Pro Tip: It's often safer to remove the REST of the class than to remove the individual in crisis. 3. THE SAFETY CHECK - Ask Three Questions: ✓ "Am I safe?" ✓ "Is my buddy safe?" ✓ "Can we remain on task?" If the answer is "NO" to ANY of these, take immediate action. 4. INVESTIGATE Repeated Behavior If you see the same behavior 2+ times, investigate the cause. Don't assume—investigate! Real Example: A non-verbal adult with autism started screaming every week. Why? A classroom fan was moved from a wooden desk to a metal filing cabinet, creating a high-pitched sound that the staff couldn't hear but that was painful to him. Once the issue was identified and resolved, the behavior stopped. Why Investigation Matters: Understanding the cause prevents: Continued distress for the individual Volunteer burnout Families leaving your church The Truth: Most "behavior problems" are actually environmental issues, sensory overload, communication breakdowns, or unmet needs waiting to be discovered and solved. About SOAR Special Needs: SOAR comes alongside churches to empower them to show "the hands and feet of Jesus" to families with individuals with special needs and disabilities. We believe every person was created by God on purpose and for a purpose. Ready to take your ministry to the next level? SOAR offers churches a FREE one-hour consultation!
