Welcome to the SOAR Disability Ministry Training Series! You made it to the final video! In this comprehensive tenth video, Doc Hunsley, Executive Director/Founder of SOAR Special Needs, brings together essential strategies that every volunteer needs to create successful, joy-filled experiences for individuals with special needs. This is your practical guide—simple tips that work in real ministry settings, real classrooms, and with real families. Essential Strategies for Success: 1. LISTEN TO THE PARENTS Have a conversation at drop-off. Ask about last night and this morning. Parents know their child best—they're your best resource. 2. BE A FRIEND Everything starts here. Be their "guide on the side" who encourages and gives frequent praise. 3. ENCOURAGE PEER INTERACTION Don't isolate individuals from peers. Facilitate connections and help classmates interact with them. Belonging happens through relationship. 4. UNDERSTAND NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION Non-verbal doesn't mean non-communicative. Watch for pointing, communication devices, blinking, gestures, and body language. 5. SET LIMITS (It's Okay to Say "No") Set enforceable limits. ❌ Don't make empty threats like "If you don't do this, mom's not coming." 6. USE FIRST/THEN or IF/THEN STATEMENTS "First worship time, THEN snacks." This helps their brain prepare for transitions. 7. AID TRANSITIONS WITH TIMERS Recommended App: "Children's Countdown Timer" (yellow rubber ducky icon) - FREE for Apple/Android. Ticks down and reveals a picture, giving the brain time to process transitions. 8. RESTRAINTS - LAST RESORT ONLY Only by trained individuals when safety is at immediate risk. The Ultimate Goal: Share Jesus with them, help them interact, and ensure they have a great time. It starts with being a friend. You've Completed the Series! You now have the foundational knowledge to: ✓ Understand the biblical mandate for disability ministry ✓ Recognize the urgent need in your community ✓ Serve effectively as a buddy ✓ Use proven strategies (Say-Show-Do) ✓ Understand and investigate behavior ✓ Redirect and de-escalate challenging moments ✓ Support individuals with practical, daily strategies What's Next? Take what you've learned and put it into practice. Start small. Be a friend. Stay consistent. Watch how God works through your willingness to serve. SOAR offers churches a FREE one-hour consultation!
