A familiar Firelands Conference matchup carries postseason weight Thursday night as the #5 seed Western Reserve Roughriders travels to face the #2 seed New London Wildcats in an Ohio High School Athletic Association Division VI Sectional Final at the Wildcat Center in New London. Western Reserve (12-9, 8-6 Firelands) closed the regular season playing some of its best basketball and finished fourth in the conference standings. The Roughriders are coming off a dominant 48-12 win over Plymouth and will look to carry that momentum into Thursday’s win-or-go-home setting. However, they’ll be trying to solve a New London team that defeated them twice during the regular season by scores of 37-27 and 41-27. For Western Reserve, establishing offense will be critical. Junior center Ava-Grace Thornburg (5’10”) provides a physical presence inside and plays with an edge. If the Roughriders are going to challenge the Wildcats, they’ll need Thornburg to control the paint, rebound at a high level, and convert second-chance opportunities while keeping the game within reach deep into the fourth quarter. New London (19-3, 14-0 Firelands) enters the sectional final riding an eight-game winning streak and continues to assert itself as one of the area’s most consistent programs. The Wildcats have won 42 straight Firelands Conference games and secured their third consecutive league title under head coach Eric Mitchell. Senior wing Valery Henry (5’9”) leads the way. A First Team All-Firelands Conference and First Team All-District 6 selection, Henry can score at all three levels and has the quickness to create off the dribble. If New London can apply defensive pressure early and generate transition opportunities, it may look to build separation quickly. With a district berth on the line, expect a physical, defensive battle between two conference rivals who know each other well. One team will move on, while the other’s season will come to an end — the stakes don’t get much higher in Division VI tournament play.
