The stage is set for a Division 6 District Semifinal showdown as the #6 seed Lakota Raiders battle the top-seeded Margaretta Polar Bears at Fremont Ross High School inside The Purple Pit in Fremont. Lakota (7-14, 6-9) enters the tournament looking to flip the script after dropping eight of its last 10 games. The Raiders average 36.6 points per game while allowing 43.1, and have battled through tight contests down the stretch, including losses to Calvert (44-31) and New Riegel (34-31) before earning a 49-38 win over Northwood. The focal point is senior guard Rylee Markel, a First Team All-District 6 selection who finished second in the SBC River in scoring with 346 points. Markel averages 16.5 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game, and can score at all three levels. For Lakota to pull the upset, the Raiders must force Margaretta to the outside and find consistent secondary scoring to support their standout senior. Standing in the way is a Margaretta squad (22-1, 10-0) that has been dominant all season. The Polar Bears completed their eighth straight SBC title and ride a 14-game winning streak into the semifinal. Their only blemish came against Division IV’s top-ranked Bellevue. Margaretta has steamrolled recent opponents, including wins over Monroeville (80-17), Toledo Christian (59-27) and Eastwood (54-36). Senior post Cassidy Lane, the SBC Bay Division Player of the Year and First Team All-District 6 pick, anchors the interior. The Gardner-Webb commit averages 13.2 points and 10 rebounds per game while shooting 81 percent from the free-throw line. Margaretta’s keys are simple: stay the course and control the glass — areas where they’ve consistently separated themselves all winter. With a district final berth on the line — the winner advancing to Feb. 26 at 3 p.m. back at Fremont Ross — the matchup pits Lakota’s upset bid against one of the area’s most consistent powers.
