Have you ever wondered how a vintage air rifle works? In this week's repair and restoration video, we completely disassemble and restore a rusty, broken, vintage 1930's Daisy brand Buck Jones Special BB toy air rifle gun. These guns were only manufactured in the mid-1930's to early 1940's and were named after Buck Jones, a country-western television and film actor of the time. The gun is a pump action rifle with an iconic compass and sundial on the stock. I began the project by disassembling the gun and laying all of the parts out on the table and labeling them so that I could tell if anything was missing. I discovered that the trigger and sear were missing but luckily were contained within the body of the gun. The air tube was broken and missing and a stock screw was missing. A leather plunger seal needed to be repaired or replaced and there was some damage to the wooden stock. The compass needle also needed to be magnetized. I began by cleaning, sanding, and refinishing the stock. Some minor wood repairs were needed but overall it was in good shape. The handle for the cocking mechanism was removed from the gun, cleaned, stained, and finished. I removed rust from the internal parts, repaired the shot tube and plunger parts, and fabricated a new air tube from common stock stainless steel tubing. No parts are available for this vintage toy gun. The leather plunger seal was not able to be repaired so I fabricated a new one from a flat leather piece. I also cleaned and repaired the screws, bolts, and washers. After repairs were complete, I zinc plated the internal parts and blued the external parts. Following that I removed the rust from the gun housing, polished it, and blued it using a cold blue solution. The air tube was modified to fit in the shot tube at the proper position, an air intake hole was added, and the power plant for the gun was reassembled. The rest of the toy gun was cleaned one more time, oiled, and reassembled. The video ends with a test and final reveal of the restored toy air gun.
