Listen to the album 🎧 https://hyperion.lnk.to/cda68477_ig2ID Robert Schumann’s 'Sängers Trost' (‘The poet’s comfort’) is the first of a set of five lieder, Op 127. The poem, written by Kerner, reflects on the fate of the poet/singer after death: even if no beloved weeps over his grave, the flowers will wet it with their dew, and the moon will gaze down over it. Often, I feel that songs are impoverished when they lose their words; but in this case, I find that the beauty of the music shines out even more clearly when shorn of the bitterness of the text. I hope that isn’t sacrilege … Steven Isserlis’s new album takes a single year—1851—as its starting point, the date of the French Érard piano played by Connie Shih, and of the Great Exhibition at which the instrument may well have been played, before exploring some of the music written in that year by a circle of musical friends, at the forefront of which was Robert Schumann.
