It served primarily as a watchtower and a place for surveillance rather than a major defense fort. Gorakhgad is a popular trekking destination for adventure enthusiasts. The trek to the fort is moderate to difficult, with rock-cut steps and steep ascents toward the summit. At the top, the fort offers stunning views of the surrounding Sahyadri mountain ranges. On a clear day, trekkers can see the nearby Machindragad Fort, Siddhagad, and Bhimashankar hills. The fort is particularly popular during the monsoon season when the greenery is lush, and the water cisterns are full, but the trek becomes more challenging due to slippery paths.
