Langdale, Alabama Mill Village - Ruins of the Mill and What Still Stands Today - Past and Present!

The Mills that are scattered among the six communities that make up what was West Point Pepperell are in different stages of demolition and decay. It is sad to drive through the Valley and see only portions of the old mills that once dominated these villages. However, time marches on and this is what's left of the old life. In this case we have a walking path where the rails ran years ago. I've seen trains on these tracks, but they've been gone a long time now. The covered bridge dedicated to Horace King, I believe was put there in the late 80s (maybe early 90s) about the same time the rails were removed and the trains silenced here. The Langdale Gym (the Sears Building) has continued to serve the students of Langdale Elementary School and is well maintained. In all my years, I've never seen a baseball game occurring on the ball field, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been used only that I haven't seen it. I feel like the area where we walked, in front of the ruins of the mill, is well used today and will continue if left available going into the future, as I hope it will be! The biggest reminder of the mills and one that I don't feel will disappear anytime soon is the mill villages. These neat, little houses where the mill workers usually lived appear to have much life left in them and hopefully will also continue well into the future.
