An objective lesson in coherence or an incoherent object lesson? This question is posed by the opening credits; it soon reveals itself to be an essential key to understanding the logic around which the film is based. It consists of a single character who with great gusto and enthusiasm relates a story using all possible communicative media at hand. In addition to gestures, vocal sounds and a form of sign-language, there are illustrations, objects created specially to match the text and words which fly by the viewer at a rapid tempo. Add to all of that ominous music and dramatic sound effects and it becomes a veritable whirlpool of potential signification; the audience is confronted with a barrage of signs and is set the task of making sense of it all. This Story Teller, however, is a dealer in fiction (a skys pie seller) happy to sell his lies to a willing public; he caters to a general desire for cohesion in an otherwise potentially incoherent universe. The text itself is filled with cohesive discourse markers that are used to make ones linguistic utterances meaningful in a given context. These discourse markers refer to a set of actions, things and places which not only have nothing to do with one another, but are if not unlikely, entirely impossible, such as an erstwhile cousin and the statue of corrupted endeavour. As the text is repeated and its order is changed, the sense of high camp is gradually replaced by one of growing tension and then fear; the musical soundscape which develops around the text increases steadily in volume and content, and despite it all, the Story Teller just keeps on telling his ridiculous story. Furthermore, he appears to remain not only powerless to change it but to be unable to sense the havoc being wrought upon his tale. Towards the end, as the noun groups are placed into a sort of order on screen, the music begins to exert its own special sense of musical cohesion, rising above the text but at the same time remaining an essential part of it. The film has changed from an ironic parody into something frenetic and frightening. The insanity of The Corrupted Endeavour is a metaphor for a human race which finds it so desperately important to make sense of its universe, no matter what the consequences are. The audience who have a birds eye view of the Story Tellers fate become unwitting participants, complicit with the film-maker. The Story Teller, then, may be powerless to change his ridiculous story, but the audience who stayed to listen have become complicit in its perpetuation.
