THE PAINSTAKING CYCLE

A film which uses a fictive language not only to communicate a narrative but to subvert our expectations of film and to ultimately question the way language perpetuates culture. In this film, the language lesson format is revealed to be not nearly as innocuous as it first appears. The narrator trapped within its structure and the words that bind him to the (entirely fictive) culture that has created him, tries to describe in a letter why he has to escape the language which is ultimately stifling him and driving him insane. Tools I use in this film include stylisation, the ability of music to change the way we experience time, distanciation and metalinguistics.
