I. Selam of the Sabâ Mevlevî Âyini with music by Hammâmîzâde İsmail Dede Efendi (1778–1846). İsmail Dede Efendi was one of the leading composers of Ottoman classical music and an important figure in the Mevlevî tradition. In the final year of his life, during a period of profound cultural transformation in the Ottoman Empire (the so-called Tanzimat, when court music increasingly opened itself to Western European influences), he left Istanbul to undertake the pilgrimage to Mecca, where he passed away. His works remain among the most refined expressions of the classical repertoire and, at the same time, symbolise the end of an era. The Persian poem of this First Selam comes from the traditional Mevlevî repertoire and is commonly attributed to Rumi. Original text and translation below. With weeping and with sighing it continually repeats: “O God, O God, O God.” From Love were born both the high and the low, the dark earth and the blue sky. From Love existence came into being in this world, so that, through wisdom, the Creator might become manifest. On the spiritual path, the first step is this: that the heart, within the body, be purified from the clay. The love of the realised ones is higher than the love of God, for within them God has hidden His secrets. Verso la fine della sua vita, a fronte dei molteplici cambiamenti dovuti alle cosiddette riforme "Tanzimat" e all'apertura dell'impero alla tradizione musicale europea, decise di intraprendere il pellegrinaggio alla Mecca (l’Hajj). Non fu un vero e proprio esilio, ma questo suo gesto viene spesso interpretato come un consapevole distacco dai "tempi moderni". Muore dunque alla Mecca, probabilmente di colera. Resta uno dei compositori più significativi della musica ottomana, ma anche una figura simbolica della fine di un'era. Il testo poetico proviene dalla traidzione Mevlevi ed è comunemente attribuito a Rumi Ascoltate il lamento, il suono del rebab, che svela i segreti dell’Amore in ogni forma. Con pianto e con gemito ripete sempre: “O Dio, o Dio, o Dio.” Dal’Amore sono nati l’alto e il basso, la terra oscura e il cielo azzurro. Dall’amore è nata l’esistenza nel mondo, affinché, attraverso la sapienza, il Creatore si renda manifesto. Nel cammino spirituale la prima cosa è questa: che il cuore, dentro il corpo, diventi puro dalla terra. L’amore degli uomini realizzati è più alto dell’amore di Dio, perché negli uomini Dio ha nascosto i Suoi segreti. Dio è l’Adorato di tutti nel mondo; non vi è creatura che non sia Suo servitore.
