Our pastor does a program with his twelve or thirteen year olds with a theme every month for a year - good, honest, biblical truths and foundational principles for life. In our family, we have the teenager books - a stack of four books we give our teens. It is twenty-eight degrees. The trees are beautiful with a coating of ice just thick enough to not break them, and it is a beautiful day. It's a blessing. I was blessed last night by my daughter. I'll back up a few steps. Our pastor does a program with his twelve or thirteen year olds. They have a theme a word every month for a year, and their whole family knows all twelve of the themes, and they all go over them together, which is a beautiful thing. They're just good, honest, biblical truths and foundational principles for life. And that's a cool "coming of age" practice. In our family, we have the teenager books. I've got a stack of four books that we give our teens. They're educational and easy to read books for thinking about life, getting along with people, coming to a closer relationship with Christ, and just being well founded and well grounded. The opportunity last night was one of the books in particular. You've heard me talk about a lot on the adult version, but they have a teen version as well. We were going to bed. My son was having a sleepover last night, so we had four little guys over making noise and camping out because they didn't have school today. But the teenager did. And she's not quite a teenager, we gave them to her a year early. COVID and the nature of life - we just decided the maturity of her and where she's at and learned from the older kids, and she might be more likely to read them as a twelve year old than a teenager. It was story time and I said "Grab one of your teenager books, and let's start reading it together." And I didn't do that well with the others, and so I'm trying to be a better parent every day. That's one of my core beliefs - I'm getting better every day. And the four books are: The Four Agreements, The Alchemist, The Shack, and The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens (Get the book: https://amzn.to/4aV3LSf). And I told her when we gave them to her "Hey, I want you to read this one with me. Read this together, and we can talk about each of the habits." So that was the book she picked. We read the introduction. There's a poem at the beginning of that. It talks about things that can raise you up to greatness, and it's the same thing that can bring you down to misery, and it goes on and on. So if you get a chance, grab that book and read that poem in the front of it. I think I have it posted on my website somewhere. And then it says "Who am I that can cause your ultimate success and your ultimate failure? And if you handle me well, I'll be successful for you. And if you don't, I will crush you." Having her choose that book - and just the author does a good job of writing it to kids and for kids and teenagers. It's not specifically biblical. The habits are principles, principles are truth, and truth is biblical. And these principles, the seven habits are truth. So what's the lesson here? Raise your kids well. Love them. Be on the same team with them and come up with or learn a coming of age ceremony, practice, routine, something to improve your parenthood, your parenting, and your child--your relationship. Find a coming of age practice and use something special anytime to draw your family closer together, draw yourselves in unity as a family of God. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. You be blessed! #KingdomFamilyLeader #ComingOfAge #TeenagerBooks #TheFourAgreements #SevenHabits
