Based around a variation of a tri-tone, the riff is instantly recognisable. It was the first single from the hugely influential Metallica album of 1991. Metallica, or the Black Album as it quickly became known, was very expensive in both money and personal relationships, was remixed three times and its release was delayed for a year. However, it was worth it as the band shot into the music mainstream, particularly in their home country where the record sold by the truckload. It also marked a musical departure featuring a more radio friendly sound, courtesy of Mötley Crüe producer Bob Rock.
