The We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) movement has responded to controversy surrounding remarks made by its leader Azruddin Mohamed regarding the presence of gay and lesbian individuals in the prayer space of a mosque. Speaking at a press conference, WIN General Secretary Odessa Primus said the comments should be understood within the context of religious beliefs and Islamic practices concerning the sanctity of the musallah, the designated prayer area in a mosque. Primus acknowledged that members of the LGBTQ+ community may feel offended but argued that the issue reflects differing cultural and religious perspectives rather than hostility toward any group. She urged respectful dialogue among stakeholders, emphasizing that Guyana’s diverse society requires mutual understanding between religious communities and advocates for LGBTQ rights.
