String Quartet (1980) by Andrew Toovey Recently I was sorting out (as many people do) a collection of boxes filled with music programmes, letters, music etc, and found a reel to reel tape recording of pieces I wrote and recorded in 1980. I was 18 and had written the pieces for close friends who were also in the Brent Youth Orchestra. They were: Wendy Clark - Violin 1 Tanya Huehns - violin 2 Andrew Toovey - myself on viola Linda Sutton (then Linda Stone) Sadly the score of the string quartet and the piano part of the Violin and Piano pieces (except the solo violin part that Wendy kept safely for all these years) have been lost and fingers crossed I may find them in the future. The quartet demonstrates my varied sense of harmony, textures and playfulness at times, in many ways possibly showing the composers I was listening to at that time (Bartok, Berg, Schoenberg etc). So the visual for the String Quartet I chose was a slow meandering film I made of an Anselm Kiefer painting - a painter whose work I love, especially his wonderful textures. Enormous thanks to Callum Lawrence for the excellent digital transfer of the original reel to reel tape and to Robert Crehan for adding my visual to the music so perfectly. And of course after all these years a big thanks to the performers Wendy, Tanya and Linda - I have such wonderful memories of my time in the Brent Youth Orchestra!
