Find licensed contractors in your area: https://www.zonezerocalifornia.com In this episode, we continue exploring California’s Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones (VHFHSZ). This time we visit Malibu, one of the most well-known coastal communities where residential development sits directly within wildfire-prone terrain. Using the official CAL FIRE hazard maps as a reference, this video looks at how large portions of Malibu fall within high and very high wildfire hazard classifications due to the surrounding Santa Monica Mountains, steep canyon terrain, and dense coastal vegetation. Malibu has experienced multiple major wildfire events over the years, making it one of the most visible examples of California’s wildland-urban interface — where homes are built directly within fire-prone landscapes. As we move through the area, we point out examples of property conditions that Zone Zero standards are designed to address. Many homes along the coast and in the canyon areas were built long before modern wildfire mitigation practices became widely understood. We highlight common features within the first five feet of structures that may influence ignition risk, including: • Wood fencing and gates attached directly to homes • Combustible landscaping materials near structures • Wood decks and exterior architectural features • Outdoor furniture and stored materials close to siding Topics covered include: • Why much of Malibu falls within the VHFHSZ classification • How canyon terrain and coastal winds influence wildfire behavior • The relationship between wildland vegetation and residential development • Examples of conditions that could be affected by Zone Zero regulations • What homeowners in coastal hillside communities should understand about wildfire mitigation Malibu provides one of the clearest examples of how wildfire risk and residential development intersect along California’s coastline.
