For more information and to find licensed contractors in your area: https://www.zonezerocalifornia.com In this episode, we continue exploring where California’s Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone (VHFHSZ) intersects with Los Angeles neighborhoods. This time, we head into Beachwood Canyon in the Hollywood Hills, an area where dense residential development sits directly against wildland terrain. Using the official CAL FIRE hazard maps as a reference, this video looks at how wildfire risk zones run through parts of the Hollywood Hills where homes are built along steep hillsides and narrow canyon roads, surrounded by brush and open space. As we drive through the neighborhood, we also point out real-world examples of conditions that Zone Zero standards are intended to address. Many properties in hillside areas were built decades ago, long before modern wildfire science influenced building practices. During the drive-through, we highlight common features that may present ignition risks during ember-driven wildfires, including older wood fencing attached to homes, combustible landscaping materials close to structures, and other elements within the first five feet of buildings. Topics covered include: • Where the VHFHSZ boundary runs through Beachwood Canyon • Why hillside neighborhoods face higher ember exposure during wildfires • How older construction patterns intersect with modern wildfire mitigation standards • Examples of landscaping and fencing conditions that could be affected by Zone Zero regulations • What homeowners in hillside communities should be aware of as wildfire policy evolves Beachwood Canyon is a clear example of how wildfire risk and dense urban neighborhoods coexist in Los Angeles. Understanding where those boundaries begin — and how properties interact with them — is an important step toward improving wildfire resilience in the city.
