Find licensed contractors in your area: https://www.zonezerocalifornia.com In this episode, we continue exploring where California’s Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones (VHFHSZ) intersect with Los Angeles communities. This time we visit Santa Monica, where wildfire hazard zones extend into the foothills along the eastern edge of the Santa Monica Mountains. Using the official CAL FIRE hazard maps as a reference, this video looks at how wildfire risk reaches neighborhoods near the canyon and hillside areas above Santa Monica. While much of the city is densely urban, the terrain changes quickly as development approaches the mountains and open space. As we drive through parts of the area, we point out examples of property conditions that Zone Zero standards are intended to address. Many homes near the hillsides include landscaping, fencing, and outdoor features that were built long before wildfire mitigation practices were widely understood. Along the route we highlight common features that can increase ignition risk during ember-driven wildfires, including wood fencing attached to homes, combustible ground materials near structures, and other elements located within the first five feet of buildings. Topics covered include: • Where the VHFHSZ boundary appears near the Santa Monica foothills • How wildfire risk intersects with coastal Los Angeles neighborhoods • Why areas bordering canyon and hillside terrain face ember exposure • Examples of landscaping and fencing conditions that could be affected by Zone Zero regulations • What homeowners should consider as wildfire mitigation standards continue to evolve Santa Monica shows how wildfire risk in Southern California can reach communities that many people think of primarily as coastal and urban.
