To connect with licensed contractors in your area: https://www.zonezerocalifornia.com In this episode, we continue examining California’s Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones (VHFHSZ). This time we visit Encino, where residential neighborhoods in the San Fernando Valley transition into the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains. Using the official CAL FIRE hazard maps as a reference, this video looks at how wildfire hazard zones extend into the southern portions of Encino, particularly near canyon roads and hillside properties that border open space and natural terrain. While much of Encino appears suburban and flat, the hazard classification changes as homes move closer to the foothills. In these edge areas, properties may face higher ember exposure during wind-driven wildfire events. As we move through the neighborhood, we point out examples of property conditions that Zone Zero standards are designed to address. Many homes in Encino were built before ember-driven wildfire science influenced construction and landscaping practices. We highlight common features within the first five feet of structures that may increase ignition risk, including: • Wood fencing attached directly to homes • Combustible ground cover such as bark mulch • Vegetation planted close to foundations and siding • Wood decks, gates, and exterior elements Topics covered include: • Where the VHFHSZ boundary appears in Encino • How wildfire hazard zones intersect with Valley neighborhoods • Why foothill-adjacent properties face increased ember exposure • Examples of landscaping and fencing conditions that could be affected by Zone Zero regulations • What homeowners near the hills should understand as wildfire mitigation standards continue to evolve Encino is another example of how wildfire hazard zones extend into established residential communities where suburban development meets natural hillside terrain.
