Prepping the Off-Grid Cabin Before the Lake Ice Breaks up (A Surprise visit!)

We’re finally back home at our off-grid cabin on a remote island in the Canadian wilderness after six months of overlanding across Europe. But early spring brings one of the most challenging times of year on the lake. As the weather begins to warm, the frozen lake enters what locals call the spring shoulder season — when the ice is too thin for snowmobiles but still too solid for boats. For several weeks each year, getting to and from the island becomes extremely difficult. Before that happens, we need to make one more supply run across the frozen lake. In this episode, Peter takes Carol across the ice so she can drive into town for groceries and supplies, while hauling propane back to the cabin to prepare for the coming thaw. Family and friends also make their way out to the island for a beautiful winter day of snowmobiling, campfires, and great food — and Uncle Tim surprises everyone with a helicopter visit and rides over the frozen lake and surrounding forests. Before everyone heads home, the boys help fill the woodshed with firewood, and we spend the afternoon hauling and stacking the rest so the cabin will be ready to ride out the coming spring thaw.
