If you’ve learned high school chemistry, you’ve probably learned about the octet rule. But why are there exceptions to the octet rule, like hydrogen and helium, or expanded octets? Well, the short answer is because it isn’t a rule — it’s more of a guideline. Watch this video for a summary of the octet rule, to learn why it isn’t a rule and to hear about why expanded octets happen. I also introduce a better theory — molecular orbital theory.
