Nicoletta was born in the Italian town of Pisa, Tuscany. She studied, trained, and worked there until 2004, when she took on her current consultant anaesthetist post at St George’s Hospital in London. As an Honorary Reader at St George’s Medical School, Nicoletta oversees the professionalism domain of the undergraduate medical curriculum. In 2005 she became disabled after surviving a life-threatening illness. She had been married to Gianluca, the head of service in social care, for nearly 32 years. Their two adult children - Chiara, 24, and Francesco, 22 – have long flown the nest, but 14-year-old Labrador, Sammy keeps them in check. In many respects Nicoletta had a privileged start in life, but soon learnt that no one is ever beyond experiencing difficulties and prejudice: first, as a young girl and woman dreaming of becoming a doctor in provincial Italy in the 1960s and 70s, then as an international medical graduate taking on a consultant job in London, then again as a newly disabled doctor returning to work. Nicoletta had learnt that knowledge is a powerful tool for personal growth, and that education is a route to freedom. She has also learnt that she can help empower other people by transmitting her love for knowledge and learning. Nicoletta’s story is about passion - a passion for learning that becomes a passion for teaching, and gradually blurs the boundaries between the two. It is also a story about resilience, about discovering the indomitable strength of the human spirit, and the liberating power of knowledge and education. It is, above all, a story about love and kindness, given and received, without which none of what you are about to hear would have been possible. 00:00:00 Start 00:00:18 2 minute introduction 00:02:06 Tell us about your upbringing 00:06:41 What was it like being a young girl in Italy? 00:09:14 What made you want to move to the UK to pursue your dream in becoming a doctor? 00:14:11 How did your health change in 2005? 00:22:39 How did you come to acknowledge that you were disabled? 00:24:24 How did your perception of yourself change? 00:30:42 What was it like returning to work? 00:36:51 What lessons did you learn through your experience of becoming disabled? 00:39:25 What are some of the lessons you are still learning? 00:41:02 How have you come to understand the term 'resilience'? 00:44:48 How did your passion for learning play a part in your journey? 00:48:42 How can we better support healthcare professionals with disabilities? 00:53:12 Reflective Questions 00:53:42 Close and please subscribe Contact information: LinkeIN profile: https://uk.linkedin.com/in/nicoletta-...
