Four days. 63km. A bit wet at times. Bloody great adventure! In April 2025, Dorian and I took on the Rees-Dart Track in Mount Aspiring National Park — one of the South Island’s best multi-day alpine hikes. On day one we had heavy rain and some raging river crossings But days two to four had clear skies, glacier views and magical trails — big valleys, wild weather and proper backcountry huts. What is the Rees–Dart Track? The Rees–Dart is a ~63km alpine route near Glenorchy, linking the Rees Valley to the Dart Valley via Rees Saddle (1,477m). It’s usually completed in 4–5 days and is considered an advanced tramp thanks to: River crossings and exposed sections Rapid alpine weather changes Remote, rugged terrain Classic Department of Conservation backcountry huts (including Shelter Rock Hut and Dart Hut) Unlike the crowded Great Walks, this one feels remote and raw — fewer people, bigger landscapes. Why This Hike Is Epic Climbing above the Rees Valley to Shelter Rock Hut Crossing Rees Saddle with 360° mountain views Dart Glacier and braided river plains Spotting native wildlife, including the rare Takahē, once thought extinct That moment when the rain clears and the mountains light up The Rees–Dart sits in the heart of the Southern Alps / Kā Tiritiri o te Moana — shaped by glaciers, steeped in exploration history, and widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s best alpine tramps. #nz #trailrunning #newzealand #tramping #hiking #outdoors #trailrunning #mountains
