On January 2-4, 1944, at the infamous "Suicide Creek" near Cape Gloucester, Japanese defenders initially dismissed Company C of the 1st Battalion, 17th Marines as just another construction crew—until these combat engineers proved that sometimes the most dangerous Marines are the ones with bulldozers and explosives. After two bulldozer operators were shot while cutting a tank ramp under heavy fire, a volunteer Marine finished the job using a shovel and axe handle to operate the controls, completing a corduroy road that allowed Sherman tanks to cross the creek at first light on January 4th. The tank-infantry assault that followed obliterated the Japanese bunker complex at point-blank range, leaving 115 enemy dead at the creek alone and reducing two entire Japanese battalions to barely 30% strength with an estimated 500 total casualties across the linked engagements.
