On November 22, 1943, at Tarawa's deadly Betio Island, 1st Lt. Alexander "Sandy" Bonnyman Jr. led a 21-man Marine engineer team in a daring assault on a massive Japanese command bunker that had been pinning down Allied forces on Red Beach Three. Using flamethrowers and demolition charges, Bonnyman fearlessly climbed onto the bunker's roof to flush out defenders, while supporting Marines and a Sherman tank cut down the fleeing Japanese—killing approximately 150 inside the bunker and over 100 more as they attempted to escape. Though Bonnyman was killed in the action, his heroic assault broke the enemy stronghold and earned him a posthumous Medal of Honor, proving that sometimes one Marine with the right weapon could turn the tide of an entire battle.
