Traditional Theshing with 1906 Jonathan Wheeler Steam Engine and 1948 Ransomes Thresher, Hoxne, Suffolk 2017 This video show a technique for producing thatching straw, used by Graham Borrill, Thatcher of Hoxne Suffolk. Long stemmed 'Squareheads Master' wheat, gown upto 5 feet tall, is cut slightly green and stood in shocks for a few weeks to ripen. The shocks have been loaded onto a trailer to create a portable haystack. Three trailer loads are to be threshed. In the threshing process, the straw is separated into long stalks, extruded like a continuous bail and this is the thatching straw; grain at the other end of the machine and chaff, from the side - composed of the halvers - the grain stem. Threshing has always been a social occasion as it needs a large labour force. Ratter dogs are essential too.
