I love this concept from the Yoga Vasistha! the four soldiers guarding the road to liberation as the embodiment of patience, inquiry, contentment, and association with the wise. I think that patience is the most important of these, at least for me. Inquiry was easy. I was researching and asking questions as a little kid about supernatural powers, healing, science, and the like. I think most people who end up on a spiritual path are like that. As you mature it becomes self-inquiry and deeper inquiry. Contentment seems akin to patience. You can't be complacent, but you can't fret constantly over perceived lack of progress, either. This points to patience as the one that is the real powerhouse. Drop by drop by drop into the bucket, never knowing how far you are from the top, never knowing if or when the bucket will overflow into the vastness of whatever exists beyond that bucket! Association with the wise is helpful, but the opposite can also be useful. For example, if one is surrounded by people who focus on the problems in the world or on distressing health conditions or politics or environmental problems, can you hold to the flame of joy within your own heart? Can challenging situations or people create an increasing desire and an indestructible will towards happiness, gratitude, and a level of detachment that knows that only the eternal is real? And then we come to patience: an argument can be made that this soldier is the commander of them all. I think being a householder is fantastic for patience. Will the years of diapers and homework and playdates and cooking and socializing at school events and helping your children through crisis after crisis put out the flame that burns for something beyond the endless demands of caretaking and earning a living? The pot will simmer slowly but surely, and the water will turn to steam increment by increment. Patience is the soldier I will appeal to when I ask for passage on the road to liberation. #yoga #yogainspiration #liberation #spiritualawakening #spiritual #spiritualliberation #spiritualstory #guru #guruteachings #spiritualteachings #yogavasistha Yoga Vasistha on ThriftBooks: https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/yoga-va...
