Hopewell, Virginia is located near the James River, about 20 miles south of Richmond. On New Year's Day, this Norfolk Southern rail yard was still hard at work. NS 3020 and NS 714 ran as a pair for the switching operation. NS 3020 is an EMD GP40-2 built in 1977, and NS 714 is a Rebuilt EMD RP-E4C originally built in 1971 as a GP38. The latter is a slug unit that lacks a prime mover, instead using power generated by the other unit, NS 3020, to power its own traction motors. This is good for yard work because not as much sheer power is needed, and traction is essential to quickly accelerating and moving heavy train cars around yards. This pair of locomotives picked up cars from earlier arrival trains and switched them onto the correct tracks in the classification yard. Which track they go onto is determined by each car's destination. Cars headed for the same industry are placed on the same track.
