[Anchor] The commander of U.S. Forces Korea has released an East Asia map shown upside down—presented from a completely different angle. He said that when viewed this way, the hidden strategic meaning becomes clear, emphasizing that the Korean Peninsula is the region’s strategic central axis. Yoon Jin reports. [Report] A "East-Up Map." In this map, produced this year for USFK training, the Korean Peninsula is flipped upside down and positioned at the center of East Asia. Commander Brunson of U.S. Forces Korea unveiled the map, stressing that flipping the map reveals the peninsula’s strategic significance. From Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek—the largest U.S. overseas military base—to Pyongyang, Beijing, and Vladivostok, the distances show that the peninsula is a strategic axis capable of simultaneously deterring both Russia and China. USFK noted in particular that its forces are “not an outside force, but one located inside the operational space for counter-China and counter-Russia operations,” adding that “from China’s perspective, USFK’s Osan Air Base is a close-range threat.” The statement stands out for expanding the scope of USFK’s importance beyond the peninsula itself. USFK also underscored the need for trilateral cooperation among South Korea, Japan, and the Philippines. Connecting the three countries—each of which has a mutual defense treaty with the United States—forms a solid triangle containing China. [Paik Woo-yeal/Professor of Political Science and International Studies, Yonsei University: “It shows that USFK has a function that extends across the entire Western Pacific—from China and Russia all the way to the South China Sea and the South Pacific.”] The release of an internal training map and the commander’s personal explanation is interpreted as an effort to highlight USFK’s expanded role—its “strategic flexibility”—and encourage greater military contribution from South Korea.
