Jochen Thomann and his team build dry stone walls. They place stone on stone without mortar between the joints. This craft is as old as the hills - the landscape gardeners have mastered this art. In Oberndorf am Neckar, they are terracing the Martin family's hillside garden with around 150 tons of natural stone. The shell limestone stones come from a quarry in Würzburg. Each colossus weighs around 300 kilos. However, before they lay the first block, they first dig a base. Without a foundation, no wall will be stable or last long. The historical construction method also provides for drainage, loose gravel and dosing. After the preparatory work, the search for the right stones begins, like a 3D puzzle. From the first to the third row, each stone is weighed, aligned and worked on - with chisels and muscle power, with mallets and setters. A job that will last for many generations.
