People have been paving paths since the wheel was invented. Natural stones, sand and water have proven their worth for thousands of years. The so-called unbound construction method works without mortar and lasts for generations. Frank Schnitzler is one of the few stonemasons in Germany who still practise the craft of paving. The trained road builder sits in the sand with a slouch hat, stool and setting hammer. He digs planting holes in it with a fin, one for each paving stone. He plants them like a gardener. To ensure they sit well in the sand bed, he taps them down with three to five hammer blows. The tapping with the hammer sounds like music to his ears. Born in Bavaria, he prefers to use discarded paving stones. He taps 70-year-old granite from the Ammersee region into the sand. The misshapen stones find a new home in Scherstetten near Augsburg in the segmental arch formation - from street paving to outdoor seating - a paved area of around 30 square meters.
