The hike from Fira to Oia along the caldera of Santorini, Greece, is one of the most beautiful hikes on the island. The trail runs high above the cliffs along the crater rim, offering stunning views of the volcanic crater, the Aegean Sea, and the unique landscape of the volcanic island of Santorini. Finally, we reach Oia, a picture-perfect Greek village with bright white houses and shining blue domes high above the sea. The hike actually begins in Fira, the main town of Santorini. However, we start in Imerovigli, our overnight stop north of Fira, which saves us two kilometers of walking today. Of course, we've already walked the route to Fira: • Fira, Santorini, Greece - white house... . Spectacular panoramas accompany us along the entire path. The caldera of Santorini lies at our feet. The Aegean Sea glitters deep blue in the sun. The hiking trail runs high above the cliffs. It is well marked and impossible to miss. Our destination, Oia, is almost always in sight; the village glows white against the dark cliffs. But it's still about 8,5 km to Oia. We have to climb 150 meters and descend 380 meters. The path is partially paved, but often we also cross loose lava and pumice scree. Flip-flops are not suitable footwear; at the very least, athletic shoes are recommended. There is virtually no shade along the trail, so please remember a sun hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water! Soon after Imerovigli, the built-up area ends. Our path takes us uphill and downhill through volcanic landscapes. We stop frequently to enjoy the beautiful views of the caldera and the island. Along the way, we pass several small Greek Orthodox churches. Built in the Cycladic style, they offer great photo opportunities with their white walls, blue domes, and typical bell towers. And last but not least, they invite you to take a short break! After about 2,5 hours, we reach Oia, also called Ia. Some consider Oia the most beautiful village in Greece! And indeed, the white houses, the blue domes, the narrow streets, and all of this in a picturesque location high above the sea are a picture-perfect dream. As is the case almost everywhere on Santorini, however, this dream is shared with many other tourists. One of the most beautiful viewpoints in all of Santorini is the Londsa Castle on the outskirts of Oia. From the ruins of this Venetian castle, the view sweeps far across the caldera and the Aegean Sea. We can see as far as Fira and Imerovigli. The castle is also a popular spot for sunset. We take the bus back to Imerovigli. The view of the caldera from there is just as beautiful! You can find the GPS track for the hike here: https://www.komoot.com/de-de/tour/209...
