Thousands of soldiers marched in Belarus on Saturday as part of the Victory Day parade commemorating 75 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe, after President Alexander Lukashenko rejected calls for a lockdown amid the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic. Flanked by generals, Lukashenko called it unacceptable for Belarus to even think about cancelling the parade. Belarus has defiantly opposed lockdown measures or physical distancing and has kept its borders open, calling concern about the spread of the virus a “psychosis.” There are 21,107 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Belarus and 121 deaths, but there are suggestions the official statistics may underestimate the true impact of the virus.
