The widest lens I regularly use on the Toyo Field 810M is a single-coated Fujinon W 180mm f5.6 in Copal shutter. It has a FFE of 28mm which is very wide (lenses feel wider on large format in my experience) and its focal length is long enough that there are no issues with any part of the camera getting into the frame. It’s only got a few millimetres of movement on 8x10 so it needs to be carefully aligned to the centre of the film but as can be seen in the images I've recently made, image quality is excellent from centre to corners. I have a shorter lens that almost/just covers 8x10, a Fujinon NSW 125mm f8 lens which has an ultra-wide FFE of 19mm. It's exceedingly difficult to work with on the Toyo Field 810M (and every other camera that has fixed rear standard) because it's so wide that the front bed appears in the frame, and the camera needs to be twisted and turned (figuratively) to drop the bed down to get it out of the way. Dropping the bed requires tilting the front and back standards to get everything aligned again, it’s extremely awkward and time consuming. I tried it a year or so ago and found it too hard. Instead I got my ultra-wide kicks from a Fujinon SWD 75mm lens on a 5x7 camera which is 16mm FFE. A couple of days ago I got to try the lens on a friend's Tachihara 8x10 which has rear focus, so the lens can be put right at the fronts the bed is out of the way, the back is moved forward to focus. The results were excellent. Rather than buying another camera to use the lens I thought I'd give the Toyo another go. I hadn't rehearsed the processes of setting the camera up for the video, this is working everything out on the go. It took the best part of an hour adjusting everything to set one shot up. Editing the video down to something vaguely watchable has been a challenge. I hope you enjoy it.
