Privateer 141 Review: An Aggressive Trail Bike Under $4000 [Mid-Travel Mashup]

The Privateer 141 is the latest aggressive trail bike from the UK-based brand with 141mm of rear travel and a 150mm Fox 36 fork. The Privateer 141 is a full alloy frame, with part internal and part external cable routing, a threaded BB, and heavy duty pivots and bearings. The 141 is made to withstand harsh riding by hard riders, and it should be an easier bike to maintain. Our size P2 came with the Shimano SLX/XT build with a 12-speed drivetrain, Magura MT5 brakes, 29" Hunt Trail Wide wheels, a One Up V2 dropper post, and Fox suspension. Retail on this build is $3,949. The Privateer 141 has excellent geometry for climbing and a Horst link suspension platform that balances efficiency and traction, though the bike's weight can be a factor on long climbs. Descending is obviously where the 141 shines, this bike is one of the most stable and surefooted bikes in the Mid-Travel Mashup. The 141 is long but it's not hard to get this where you want to go. The 141 is a big trail bike for riders on a budget. It’s not something that I would buy if I was riding more intermediate or moderate trails where I wasn’t using the full capability of the geometry and suspension, and there are certain enduro races where this bike would be a great option.
