SOUNDBITE (Farsi) Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iranian President: "In practice, democracy has turned into the rule of the minority (over the majority) and most of the people are deprived of the rights to play a determining role in the fundamental decision of the society. Just take a look at the situation in Europe and US. Elections which are one of the manifestation of people's will has become a battleground for the capitalists and an excuse for hefty spending. That is why many of the independent and pure hearted elements don't get a chance to be part of governance. Justice, freedom and human dignity have all been sacrificed for the interest of a group of minorities." 5. Mid of leaders 6. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan speaking at podium 7. SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish Prime Minister: "The origin of the United Nations and the structure of the United Nations have to be reorganised. The Syrian regime is encouraged by this bottleneck in the international system and they are committing massacres against their own people. And it is a source of shame for all humanity because this tragedy happens before their own eyes. And international balance or international relations can't be used to justify our position in Syria." 8. Mid of participants. 9. SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish Prime Minister: "The faith of the world cannot be left to the wings of only five countries. If we leave the faith of the whole world to the decision of only five countries then it means that humanity will lose in the end." 10. Wide of leaders at the forum STORYLINE: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Thursday called the US election a "battleground for capitalists" while speaking at a democracy forum a day after President Barack Obama was re-elected. He told Asian-Pacific leaders gathered at the fifth Bali Democracy Forum that democracy has become a system where the minority rules over the majority. "Just take a look at the situation in Europe and US," Ahmadinejad said during the meeting's opening day on Indonesia's resort island of Bali. "Elections, which are one of the manifestations of the people's will, has become a battleground for the capitalists and an excuse for hefty spending," he said. The price tag for the 2012 US presidential campaign was the highest ever, soaring beyond 2 (b) billion US dollars. According to some analysts Ahmadinejad was likely attending the event to try to find a place to fit in, and even if some Asian countries are not welcoming, the region as a whole is typically more accepting. Iran has long been criticised for its human rights record, including continued executions and use of stoning as a method of capital punishment. Increased Internet crackdowns and the jailing of political prisoners and journalists were also recently highlighted in a report by the UN's human rights expert on Iran. The country erupted into violence three years ago when pro-democracy protesters took to the streets to demonstrate against the election of Ahmadinejad, calling it bogus and rigged. Meanwhile on Thursday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a harsh critic of Syrian President Bashar Assad, said the United Nations' lack of concrete action against Syria is a "bottleneck in the international system" which encourages the Syrian regime. Erdogan also criticised the 15-member Security Council, which has long been deadlocked over the issue of Syria.
