At the start, Clay Regazzoni made a perfect getaway, immediately pulling clear while dragging James Hunt past Patrick Depailler. The Swiss driver quickly built a gap, as chaos unfolded behind when Carlos Reutemann and Vittorio Brambilla collided at turn one, forcing both out. Moments later, Gunnar Nilsson’s Lotus snapped with a suspension failure on Shoreline Drive, pitching him into the barriers. Hunt launched an attack on lap four, diving under brakes at the hairpin, but Depailler moved across. Forced to the outside, Hunt ran out of space and clipped the wall. Furious, he abandoned his damaged McLaren, walking slowly back and even stepping onto the track to shake his fist at Depailler on the following lap. Meanwhile, Lauda capitalized, taking second place, though by then Regazzoni was already seven seconds ahead and steadily pulling away. Further back, Jody Scheckter was charging after a poor qualifying, battling with Tom Pryce and Ronnie Peterson. But disaster struck: his Tyrrell began leaking fuel into the cockpit, filling it with fumes and burning his lower back. Despite the danger, he pressed on, overtook Depailler, and fought hard for a podium until a suspension failure on lap 35 sent him into the barriers. By mid-distance, Regazzoni had built a lead of over 15 seconds, while Lauda eased off in second. Depailler held third, though under constant pressure. Pryce retired with a broken driveshaft, Peterson dropped out with brake issues, and Jarier’s Shadow developed gearbox problems, losing multiple gears late in the race. Jacques Laffite quietly climbed into fourth, ahead of Jochen Mass, while Emerson Fittipaldi secured the first ever point for his own team by passing Jarier in the final laps. In the end, Regazzoni was untouchable, scoring a dominant victory and leading a Ferrari 1–2 with Lauda. Depailler salvaged third but faced the wrath of Hunt afterwards. Laffite’s fourth marked his best result to date, Mass took fifth, and Fittipaldi’s sixth gave his team a historic milestone.
