This video provides a brief demonstration of how to stretch some of the muscles of the upper body safely. As you follow along, please be cautious, listen for verbal cues, and pay close attention to any changes in your client’s body language, as these may be signs of discomfort or distress. Core principles and important details discussed in the Introduction video • Move Slowly and Gently: Stretches should always be done in a slow, controlled manner. Avoid bouncing or forcing the limb into a position. • Stay Within a Comfortable Range: Every client’s mobility will differ. Only move the joint within the range the client can tolerate comfortably. • Maintain Good Support: Keep one hand supporting the joint or limb while the other guides the stretch. This helps maintain stability and prevents sudden movements. • Check In Frequently: Ask the client how the stretch feels. If they experience sharp pain, resistance, or muscle guarding, stop and reassess. • Watch for Non-Verbal Signals: Facial tension, withdrawal, increased muscle stiffness, or a sudden change in breathing may indicate discomfort, even if the client doesn’t verbalize it. • Use Proper Body Mechanics: Protect your own body by keeping your back straight, bending at the knees, and staying close to the client while performing the stretch. • Keep the Environment Calm: A relaxed setting helps the client feel safe and promotes easier movement during stretching. These stretches are intended to promote gentle mobility and comfort, not to push the joints to their limits. If you’re ever unsure about a movement, pause and reset.
