Are you new to diving, interested in diving or just trying to understand what decompression sickness is? In this video, I break down decompression sickness—aka the bends—in a way that’s easy to understand. I’ll explain what’s really going on with the gases in your body at depth, and why surfacing too quickly can cause serious problems. Learn the symptoms of DCS, from joint pain and dizziness to more severe neurological signs, and what other factors like cold water, long dive times, or even flying too soon after diving can do. I'll also cover tips to prevent decompression sickness, what to do if you suspect DCS—and why time is critical! 🚨🚨🚨 CORRECTIONS IN VIDEO - IMPORTANT 🚨🚨🚨 3:34: Where I talk about the air filled spaces: Correction: Air in our scuba diving tank does NOT compress as we descend. The tank is rigid and is built to hold the air that is already compressed at high pressure. It's when we breathe in air through the regulator as we descend, when the air LEAVES the tank is when it becomes compressed in our lungs. This is why we never hold our breath while diving. 11:50: I do have the explanation on the screen in the video but I'll put it here too: The hyperbaric chamber does NOT use 100% oxygen the entire time. They follow a set schedule, switching between 100% oxygen and air to help your body safely get rid of excess gases -- and to avoid oxygen poisoning from too much oxygen under pressure. ⏰ Timestamps: 00:57: The air in your scuba tank 01:50: Atmospheric Pressure 03:44: What happens to the Nitrogen you breath in at depth 04:36: The term Off-Gassing explained 04:50: Slow ascents VS fast ascents 05:34: The full definition of what decompression sickness is 06:02: What the NDL is and why it's so important 09:13: Symptoms of DCS 09:49: Other factors that can lead to DCS 10:41: What to do if you're experiencing symptoms of DCS? 11:58: How do you prevent getting decompression sickness?
