The art we know and love found its way back to Japan in the 1990s, and is widely practiced by many high level athletes and competitors. Back in 2018, we dropped into one of the many Carpe Diem gyms, considered one of the best teams in Tokyo. On the mats were high level black belts such as Gutemberg Pereira and Tomoyuki Hashimoto, and talented athletes such as Reda Mebtouche and Danilo Hamasaki, who were brown and blue belts at the time.
