(11 May 2016) MARILYN MONROE'S LETTERS, ARTWORK ARE UP FOR AUCTION Fans can see a personal side of screen legend Marilyn Monroe when the actress' notebooks, letters, artwork and poems hit the auction block November 19 and 20 in Los Angeles. "This is incredibly rare to have such an enormous collection come to the auction block, 54 years since she passed away, the year when she would celebrate her 90th birthday. And everything is in really great condition of course coming from the Lee Strasberg estate. Lee, of course, was her acting coach. You know fans of Marilyn Monroe will know the importance and significance of that relationship. There's letters to Lee and Paula Strasberg, his wife at that time, as well. So it's most rare and most unusual and the world will be clamoring to own something from Marilyn's life and career, something so personal as these items," said Martin Nolan, executive director for Julien's Auctions. The collection from Monroe's acting coach Lee Strasberg also includes purses, furs and jewelry, both real and costume. "So you know Marilyn, you think 'Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend.' You expect her to be dripping in diamonds, but in fact Marilyn loved costume jewelry. Most of her jewelry was costume, which we have in this auction. There's also a couple of very fine pieces of jewelry, including this amazing watch, really tiny wrist, worn by Marilyn Monroe. It's a Blancpain wristwatch with diamonds on the bracelet, diamonds on the watch face itself. We estimate that at 80 to 120,000 (U.S. dollars), which is one of the most highly priced items in the auction," Nolan said. 12 of her paintings, including crayon drawings and watercolors are for sale, along with Monroe's handwritten poems. "She also wrote poems, poems that were published in the book 'Fragments' in 2012 and they are now coming to the auction block. Again, just speaks to the intellectual side of Marilyn, the artistic side of Marilyn. And then you have other notes and letters that she wrote, including record books and it sort of speaks to the sensitivity and also the vulnerability of Marilyn," Nolan explained. There's also a case that belonged to her ex-husband, Joe DiMaggio. "When she passed away under her bed there was this jewelry case, a crocodile jewelry case owned by Joe DiMaggio with his initials on the case. And interesting also is the combination code for the case is 555 and of course people would know that his number for the New York Yankees was number five," Nolan said.
