📍London, United Kingdom 🇬🇧 After six months abroad, we finally landed back on British soil. The immigration officer wasn’t thrilled about my passport stamps from Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. A raised eyebrow, a few too many questions, but eventually we were waved through. We took the train from Gatwick to Victoria and arrived just in time for golden hour, the skyline stretching out in front of us: the Tower of London, the Shard, and the dense, glassy sprawl of modern Britain. We checked into a £25-a-night hostel called Wombat’s. We’d expected the worst, but it turned out better than alright. Clean bed, quiet sleep. The next morning started with strong coffee from Black Sheep before heading to Borough Market, one of London’s true treasures. A patchwork of smells and voices, where the world’s flavours meet. We drank vermouth at 9am at a little Spanish tapas place, had oysters and champagne at Richard Haward’s stall, then tucked into empanadas and Malbec from Porteña next door. Later, wandering the Thames, we met a guy who left Wellington for London and never looked back. Not all Londoners are cold. Sometimes you just have to say hello. We crossed the Millennium Bridge, the kind of place that stops you in your tracks. At the other end stood St Paul’s, proud and dignified. A reminder of what this country can build. Leave Britain for a while. Travel through the developing world, see life without clean water, working infrastructure, or public safety nets. Then come home, pour a glass of water from the tap, and look around.
