This film was made in 2008 and takes a look at Handicap International's projects in Bangladesh at the time. 10% of people in Bangladesh live below sea level and with river erosion and frequent cyclones causing wide spread flooding, disaster risk reduction projects are vital. In this film we visit a village in northern Bangladesh with elevated platforms built by Handicap International to protect families from flooding. We meet Johura and her daughter Salma who is hearing and sight impaired. The family live on one of the raised platforms. Although Handicap International has established two resource centres in the north of the country for people with disabilities, it remains difficult for many disabled people in rural areas to access services. Since 2007, two hospital buses supported by Handicap International have travelled around the country providing life changing services to people that would not otherwise be able to access treatment. We later see Johura's and her daughter on board a hospital ship. The Arunima, which means 'ray of light', is a hospital ship set up by Handicap International bringing free services to people in remote areas. Physiotherapists, speech therapists and ophthalmologists all work on board. © Handicap International
